NDIS Dietitian Support for Children with Autism

Hi, I’m Skye. An Accredited Practising Dietitian supporting children with autism and their families to help expand food choices, support gut health, and make mealtimes less stressful for your family.

Are mealtimes a daily struggle in your home? You’re not alone.

Many children with autism face unique challenges with feeding and nutrition, such as:

  • Refusing entire food groups

  • Only wanting the same 3–4 foods

  • Meltdowns at the dinner table

  • Tummy troubles

  • Growth issues

  • Nutrient deficiencies

For many families, picky eating in autism isn’t ‘just a phase’.

It’s an ongoing challenge that leaves you feeling frustrated, guilty, and worried about your child’s growth, health, and wellbeing.

Understanding Nutrition Challenges in Autism

As a parent, you’re doing your best.

But no one prepared you for how complicated feeding could get when sensory sensitivity, food rigidity, or gut issues are part of the picture.

As an Accredited Practising Dietitian specialising in autism and feeding difficulties, I support families to make mealtimes less stressful and ensure children are getting the nutrients they need to thrive.

Food isn’t only about growth — it can also affect:

  • Energy levels & focus at school

  • Behaviour & mood (especially when blood sugar is unstable)

  • Digestive comfort (constipation, bloating and gut issues are common)

  • Long-term health (preventing nutrient deficiencies and supporting healthy growth)

Supporting your child’s nutrition doesn’t mean overhauling everything or forcing them to eat foods they don’t want.

It’s about small, realistic steps that help expand their diet, improve mealtime routines, and reduce your stress along the way.

Nutrition Support Designed for Kids with Unique Needs

At Ready Set Grow Nutrition, we understand that every child’s relationship with food is different – and that’s even more true for kids living with disability.

Whether it’s sensory sensitivities, medical needs or feeding challenges, our goal is simple: to make mealtimes easier, less stressful, and a lot more joyful.

How an NDIS Dietitian Can Help Your Child

Research shows that children on the autism spectrum are more likely to experience:

  • Fussy or selective eating

  • Sensory sensitivities that impact food acceptance

  • Constipation, diarrhoea, or gut discomfort

  • Nutrient deficiencies (like iron, zinc, calcium, or fibre)

  • Growth challenges (slow growth, weight loss, or rapid weight gain)

These challenges can make it hard for children to meet their nutrition needs — and can make mealtimes stressful for the whole family.

That’s where working with a dietitian experienced in autism can make all the difference.

Common Goals We Work On

As an Accredited Practising Dietitian, I specialise in supporting children with autism and their families with practical strategies that work in real life.

Together, we can:

  • Identify and gently expand your child’s ‘safe’ foods without pressure or battles

  • Find simple ways to boost nutrition — even if your child eats a very limited diet

  • Support gut health and manage common issues like constipation

  • Navigate food allergies and intolerances

  • Reduce mealtime stress with routines and strategies that fit your family

  • Help you feel confident knowing your child is getting what they need to grow and thrive

I can also help with:

  • Making sure nutrition goals fit within your NDIS plan

  • Collaborating with your child’s therapy team (OTs, speech pathologists, psychologists)

  • Providing support for caregivers with resources and

  • NDIS report writing

My Approach - Feeding and Mealtime Support for Familes

I know that every child is different — and every family is too.

That’s why my approach is:

  • Family-centred – strategies that work in your home, not generic recommendations or meal plans

  • Practical & realistic – small changes that make a big difference

  • Collaborative – I often work alongside OTs, speech pathologists, and schools to support progress

  • Gentle & supportive – no force-feeding, no battles, no judgment

Why work with a dietitian?

Unlike generic feeding advice, I’ll take the time to understand your child’s unique sensory profile, food preferences, medical needs, and your family’s routines. Every recommendation is tailored, evidence-based, and designed to make life easier — not harder.

Using your NDIS plan for dietitian services

My services are available under the NDIS (Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living) for both self-managed and plan-managed participants.

This means your child’s nutrition and feeding support can be fully funded through their NDIS plan.
